Rajiv Gandhi strived for the revival of the institution of Panchayat Raj.But Nitish Kumar took the concept a step further and gave fifty percent reservation to Women in the system. As a result thousands of illiterate women, who had never ventured out of their homes are heading their respective panchayats. Unfortunately many of these women themselves are not aware that they have been elected "Mukhiya" and are bestowed with tremendous responsibilities. In most cases these women are mukhias (chiefs)just on paper whereas the male members of the households call the shots. While these people blatantly and unabashedly indulge in siphoning off the funds, the local officials are more than willing to conspire with them. Many officials,in fact, show them the effective and safe ways to divert funds meant for public welfare.READ MORE.....

Like many of the ancient temples, the origin of Ajgaivinath temple is also shrouded in mystery. According to one legend, Lord Shiva was given his bow here, known as Ajgav, and so the place came to be known as Ajgaivinath. The ancient name of the place was Jahangira, which was derived from the name of Jahnu Muni. Jahangira is a distorted form of Jahnu giri (the hill of Jahnu) or Jahnu griha (the abode of Jahnu). Jahangira is now a small village forming a part of the town of Sultanganj.
The name Jahangira for the rock had continued till at least1824-25, when Bishop Heber visited the area. In Heber's Journal, Vol. 1, there is a pencil sketch of the temple on the rock tinder the caption of Jahangira. The pencil sketch depicts a mosque by the side of the temple. It is commonly said that Kala Pahar, in the course of his crusade against the Hindu temples, visited the place. He tried his best but failed to demolish Ajgaivinath temple.READ MORE.....

It is said that there was a pathshala in this village where Kalidasa was reading. The students of the school used to go to the temple of the goddess Durga for lighting. deepaks and for chanting hymns. On a dark night his class fellows decided to send Kalidasa, who was a dull student to the goddess for puja. They polished his hands with black and white powder and told him to touch the face of the goddess with his hands so that they could know that he bad really visited the place. Kalidasa went to the temple and lighted the deepak.
He tried to mark the face of the goddess with black and white powder. The goddess appeared and advised hini not to mark her face with powder. She also asked him as to what he wanted as a boon. Kalidasa said, "I want to be learned." She said, I You may go and turn over all the pages of the whole book". He came to hisresidential pathashala in the night while all were asleep. At the dead of night, as advised by the goddess, he turned over all the pages one by one and slept. When some students of the hostel woke up in the early morning and began their studies Kalidasa marked their mistakes in pronunciation and shouted "wrong", '’wrong
This conduct of his enraged them and they made a complaint to their Guru that Kalidasa, who was considered to be a very dull student, disturbed them in their studies. The Guru called him and asked as to why he was misbehaving. Kalidasa promptly replied in an unusual way that he could not tolerate the wrong pronunciation of his class fellows. The, Guru, to his utter surprise, found that the boys had erred in their pronunciation and that Kalidasa was fully justified in pointing out their mistakes. There were indigo plantations owned by Europeans at one time in various pockets of the district and they did quite good business and lived in peace and amity with the people. One of them, John Christian, composed many bhajans in Hindi. This area has produced earlier a large number of poets and philosophers.
One of them, Mandan Mishra, lived at Maheshi village and had a great philosophic discussion withSankaracharya. There are quite a few old seats of temples scattered throughout the district. But all this dismal picture is likely to change as the Kosi has been chained in 1963 by an immense barrage and the flood water will now be running through canals for irrigation purposes.
Lakhs of acres of land in Nepal and the districts of India like Saharsa, Purnea and Darbhanga will he Irrigated. Roads are being constructed and the railway communication is being made more secure.READ MORE

Ancient Bihar comprised of independent States like Magadha, Anga, Baishali, Mithila etc., which had shaped the socio-cultural heritage of India. But, it is Brihadratha, the Magadha King first established the Magadha empire in the region which in course of history came to be known as Bihar. The Sisunagas followed the Magadha Kings around 6th century B.C. Bimbisar and his son Ajatsatru annexed Anga and expanded the kingdom upto Punjab. In order to be away from the Baishali State, they erected their Capital at the confluence of the Ganges and Sone river in Pataligram which was known as Puspapur or Pataliputra. If Sisunag kings strengthened Magadha empire, it is the Maurya and Gupta kings made ancient Bihar a prosperous and enlightened State as known from the history. With the fall of Gupta dynasty to the invaders from the middle east during 7th & 8th century, Bihar lost its past glory and it no longer remained as the political and cultural centre of India. Pataliputra, Munger were annexed by the Pal Kings of Bengal. Gaya, Bhagalpur, Rohtas etc. became small independent States. The mighty Magadh empire disintegrated. Bakhtiar Khilji captured Bihar from the Pal kings, but it was difficult for Delhi Sultanate to administer. Bihar continued to be under provincial administration except during the period of Sher Shah. It is Akbar, the great Mughal emperor during 1575-76 annexed Bihar and Bengal to his empire and gave Bihar a stable administration making it a part of Bengal. However, with the decline of Mughal empire, Bihar passed into the hands of Nawabs of Bengal.READ MORE
